A robot ran 100 meters in 9.39 seconds. Then it crashed into a wall of pads

Last year the same machine needed 21.5 seconds. This year it beat Usain Bolt's time — and had to be carried off the track.

At the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, a machine called Tiangong Ultra covered 100 meters in 9.39 seconds during a preliminary heat. Bolt's human world record from 2009 is 9.58. Honor's Lightning robot came in at 9.47 — also under the human mark.

Here is the part that makes it funny instead of frightening. After crossing the line, the robots slammed straight into pads. Some had to be stretchered off by people. They can run faster than the fastest man alive. They cannot stop.

The games run in Beijing until August 26, and there is more than track and field on the schedule — soccer, table tennis and boxing, with thousands of robot participants. Watch those events specifically. Sprinting in a straight line is one problem; reacting to a moving opponent is a much harder one. If a robot handles a table tennis rally or a boxing exchange as well as it handled the 100 meters, that is the number worth remembering from this week — not 9.39.

Worth stopping on

A machine broke a record that took humanity a century to reach, then needed two people and a stretcher to get off the field. Both facts are true at the same time, and only one of them is going to stay true for long. Our guess is that the stretcher goes away before the record does.
