A chatbot made up the intelligence. The planes were already in the air.

US military aircraft were flying toward a Chinese vessel this spring. Then officials found out the intelligence behind the mission had been invented by an AI chatbot.

This spring, American military aircraft were already airborne for an armed operation against a Chinese vessel. Mid-flight, US officials discovered the intelligence behind the mission had been hallucinated — made up — by an AI chatbot. The operation was aborted at the last minute, narrowly averting a potential conflict with China, CNN reported on Friday, in an episode described by TechCrunch on September 18, 2026.

The report, which circulated during the war with Iran, claimed the ship was carrying components for a nuclear weapons program. It wasn't. A Special Operations Command analyst had asked an AI chatbot to combine open source data with classified signals intelligence, and the chatbot misread the ship's cargo manifest. Then the analyst used the same tool a second time — to format the false finding into an official-looking summary. That summary went out across command channels.

What it means

Here is the part that should stay with you. The mistake didn't spread because someone lied or because a system was hacked. It spread because the wrong answer came back looking right. A chatbot was asked to tidy up the findings, and tidy formatting is exactly what people in a hurry treat as proof of work. Every reader after that saw a clean, official-looking document instead of one analyst's unverified query.

The formatting was the weapon. Not the error — the polish on it.

You already know this failure in a smaller form. A confident-sounding email from your bank, a message from a friend's hacked account, a summary that reads so smoothly you don't check the numbers. Same mechanism, different stakes. The US military is racing to put AI into decision-making to move faster than China; the Pentagon has described AI as delivering a significant advantage in speeding up its kill chain so commanders can respond in the right time. Speed is the whole point of the tool. Speed is also what leaves no one standing between a hallucination and an aircraft in the air.

Who it matters to

Anyone whose job now involves an AI assistant writing something that another person will act on — the junior analyst, the paralegal, the medical coder, the 24-year-old at a first desk job who was handed a chatbot and no rulebook about when its answer needs checking. That's the exact role in this story, and nobody told that analyst either. It also touches people deciding what to study right now: the skill with actual market value is turning out to be knowing when a machine is confidently wrong, not knowing how to prompt it. And it touches everyone who lives somewhere a conflict with China would reach — which is most of the planet.

What's next

Watch for what safeguards, if any, get put in place around AI use in intelligence work. The source names no deadline, no inquiry and no policy change — so what happens next, nobody has said publicly yet. Jake Steckler, a research scholar at GovAI and a veteran US Army officer, told TechCrunch the incident should be a call to add more safeguards, not a reason to avoid AI. Whether anyone acts on that is the open question.

One detail to hold on to

The analyst used the chatbot twice. Once to find the answer, once to make it look official. The second query is the one that did the damage — and it's the one nobody would think to ban. Ask yourself how many documents you've trusted this year because they were formatted well.

Why we ran this9/10

Военные подняли самолёты из-за разведданных, которые выдумал чат-бот — это первый публично известный случай, когда галлюцинация ИИ едва не привела к боевой операции против Китая.
