For $7.60 a day, your ChatGPT question becomes ad space in India

OpenAI is turning on ads for the free and Go tiers of ChatGPT in India, where it says it has more than 100 million weekly users. The entry ticket for advertisers: ₹725 a day.

From now on, the answer you get from ChatGPT in India can sit next to a paid brand. OpenAI said on Thursday it will start showing ads on the Free and Go tiers — the two cheapest ways to use the assistant, and the ones most people in the country are on.

It starts with 50 brands, and OpenAI says it teamed up with the ad agencies WPP and Omnicom to run them. Next month there's an ad manager, where any business can build a campaign as long as it spends at least ₹725 a day — about $7.60. That's the price of getting your product placed inside the conversation of a country's worth of users. The company changed its terms of service earlier this month to say it would show ads while people use the assistant.

What it means

Search ads worked because you typed three words into a box. ChatGPT is different: people tell it what they can afford, what they're shopping for, which job they're applying to, what hurts. OpenAI's own pitch says the quiet part out loud. Dave Dugan, who runs global ads solutions there, said businesses can "introduce themselves at relevant, high-context moments when decisions are beginning to take shape."

"High-context moment" is a polite name for the second you tell a machine what you want.

And notice who gets the ads: Free and Go. The people paying nothing or paying under $5 a month are the ones whose screens are for sale. India was cultivated for exactly this scale — OpenAI launched the sub-$5 Go plan in August 2025, ran a promo making it free for a full year, and advertised heavily during the IPL and WPL cricket seasons. The cheap tier built the audience. The audience is now the product being sold.

India isn't the experiment. The U.S. got ads in February, Europe earlier this month. India is the volume.

Who it matters to

Students and first-jobbers who use the free tier because ₹0 is the budget — they'll be the most advertised-to users of the assistant they use for homework, cover letters and coding help. Anyone on Go, the plan sold as the affordable one: paying a little turns out not to buy you out of ads. And every person outside India who ever typed a money problem, a health worry or a job question into a chat box, because the pattern being tested at 100 million-user scale doesn't usually stay in one country.

What's next

Two concrete things to watch. The ad manager is due next month — that's when we'll see whether the ₹725 minimum stays, and who actually shows up beyond the first 50 brands. And OpenAI is heading toward an IPO expected this year or next, so its revenue line is the tell: The Wall Street Journal reported $6.7 billion in the quarter ended June 2026, up from $5.7 billion. If ads matter, the next number is where it shows. What OpenAI hasn't said is how ads will be marked inside answers, or whether paying users stay ad-free for good. Nobody has put a date on that.

One detail to hold on to

OpenAI once gave ChatGPT Go away free in India for a full year. That year of free access was never charity and was never described as such — but it did produce an audience of a size no ad network in the country could ignore. The question worth sitting with: when a tool is free, who is the customer — and when it costs $5, has that actually changed?

Why we ran this7/10
